The Legend

The Lizard Man became part of South Carolina folklore after a widely reported 1988 encounter near Scape Ore Swamp outside Bishopville.

Witness descriptions have included a tall reptilian humanoid with scaled features, unusual strength, and glowing or reflective red eyes. The case remains one of the best-known cryptid stories in the American South.

Part of the Chasing Cryptids collection celebrating legendary creatures, strange encounters, regional folklore, and the places where the stories began.
